Toulouse will begin the defence of their Heineken Cup crown with a mouth-watering clash against two-time champions Wasps.

The battle of the two European titans on Sunday, October 10 is the pick of the fixtures announced for the opening round of matches in the competition.

Toulouse lifted the trophy for a record fourth time with victory in the final against Top 14 rivals Biarritz, who start out against 1998 winners Bath.

Elswehere, reigning Aviva Premiership champions Leicester kick-off their campaign in Italy with a game against Benetton Treviso.

Tough start

Saracens, who lost out to the Tigers in a thrilling domestic final at Twickenham last season, have been handed a much tougher start though, as they head to France to take on Clermont Auvergne.

Another England-France fixture opens up the weekend, with Northampton welcoming Castres Olympique to Franklin's Gardens on Friday, October 8.

The following day Pool Three heavyweights London Irish and Munster go toe-to-toe, one of a record 40 matches Sky Sports will show live this season.

Jonny Wilkinson's Toulon host Ospreys, while fellow French debutants Racing-Metro 92 meet 2009 champions Leinster at the RDS.

There are two all-Magners League ties in round one - Glasgow Warriors host Newport Gwent Dragons on Friday while Cardiff Blues, winners of last year's Amlin Challenge Cup, meet Edinburgh. Scarlets start against Perpignan.
