All Blacks lock Ali Williams is facing at least six months on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles tendon against the Chiefs.

The Blues forward will undergo surgery on Monday after suffering the injury three minutes into the friendly match on Friday.

Williams had missed the majority of last season after suffering the same injury - and he is said to have known straight away what he had done.

"This was Williams' first game back since undergoing surgery on his Achilles tendon last year and this rupture occurred just below the area that was previously operated on," Blues doctor Stephen Kara told the club's official site.

"Ali will undergo surgery early next week. He will not play for the Blues again this season and will be unable to play rugby for at least six months."
