South Africa flanker Heinrich Brussow is set to be sidelined for eight months after suffering a serious knee injury.

The 23-year-old tore the cruciate ligaments in his knee during the final minutes of the Cheetahs' Super 14 win over the Hurricanes in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

And Brussow, named SA Rugby Young Player of the Year for 2009, will now undergo surgery to repair the damage on Monday.

Initial reports have claimed Brussow will be out for eight months, with Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske admitting the flanker would be "irreplaceable".

Drotske told the club website: "It's a big blow. Heinrich is irreplacable, he is a once-in-a-lifetime-player, who always gives 150%.

"It's very bad for Heinrich, but it's one position in which we have depth with players like Hendro Scholtz and Kabamba Floors able to deputise."
