Chiefs coach Ian Foster has vowed to stand by Sione Lauaki after the No.8 was charged by police for assault.

The former All Black was involved in an incident in a bar in Hamilton - with Lauaki set to appear in court on March 23.

As a result, the 28-year-old is also set to face disciplinary measures from the NZRU and the Chiefs.

Lauaki had been due to return to the Chiefs side on Friday to face the Crusaders after he served a two-match ban for a dangerous tackle.

And although he will now miss out, Lauaki, who won 17 caps for New Zealand, has received the backing of Foster.

"Sione and I have decided that in light of the week that he has had, that the right thing to do is not play him in this game," Foster said.

"We will fully support Sione over the next few weeks."
