Blues back Luke McAlister has suffered a new setback in his bid to return to action after he suffered a broken nose in training.

The former Sale Sharks ace, who can play at fly-half or centre, had been hoping to force his way back into contention after returning from an ankle injury.

McAlister had managed to get 80 minutes of club rugby under his belt before suffering the new injury.

The Blues, who have won two and lost two of their opening four games this season, entertain the Brumbies at Eden Park on Friday.

However coach Pat Lam should have centre Isaia Toeava, wing George Pisi, wing Anthony Tuitavake and loose forward Chris Lowrey available for selection.
