South Africa's season-opening Test match against France in Cape Town on June 12 will go ahead as planned following talks between South Africa's rugby union chiefs and football World Cup officials.

According to guidelines stated by FIFA, football's world governing body, major sports events are not permitted to be staged in cities where World Cup matches are to be played for the duration of the competition, and the stadiums themselves must be handed over more than two weeks before a game.

South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins confirmed Newlands in Cape Town would retain the season opener following discussions with Danny Jordaan, the chief executive of the World Cup organising committee.

"It was a very good and helpful meeting and we made significant progress," said Hoskins.
