Ian Bell called on England to replicate their one-day series fight-back after losing the first Test against Sri Lanka.

"It was disappointing to not get anything out of this match because at certain points we played some good cricket."

Bell made scores of 83 and 74 but could not prevent his side going down by 88 runs on the final day in Kandy.

England also lost the opening game of the one-day series in the same country back in October, before winning three in a row to claim the series.

"It was disappointing to not get anything out of this match because at certain points we played some good cricket," Bell told Sky Sports.

"I think it's important tomorrow that everyone has a good rest and then we'll sit down and have a look at this Test match and get ready for the second one.

"In the one-dayers we re-grouped after going one-nil down and that's what we have to do in this Test series."

War of attrition

England's seventh-wicket pair Bell and Matt Prior shared a 109-run stand either side of tea on the final day that looked to be taking England to safety.

But both fell in the evening to Muttiah Muralitharan after Sri Lanka had taken the second new ball.

Despite the defeat, Prior remains positive about England's chances in the second Test, which starts in Colombo on Sunday.

"I think we'll take a huge amount from today," said Prior. "Vaughany this morning asked us to fight and that's what we did.

"It was a war of attrition and not quite enough in the end, but we'll take a lot from it.

"Individually, I'll take a lot from this game. It's nice to feel in good touch."
