New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori is confident his team can turn things around quickly after their 54-run defeat in the Twenty20 international against Australia in Perth.

Andrew Symonds blasted an unbeaten 85 off 46 balls before the Black Caps top order was sent packing by Australia's pacemen.

Only Jacob Oram made a significant contribution with the bat for visitors, finishing unbeaten on 66 off just 31 balls.

Vettori admitted that the top order have to improve ahead of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy opener on Friday.

"Once again we've got to sort our batting out if we want to compete over here," Vettori told Channel Nine.

"They came out and wanted to bowl fast and bowl well, they did that and we never gave ourselves a chance to bat with Jacob (Oram) and see if we could be there at the end."

Vettori, though, backed his team to perform better once the one-day series gets underway in Adelaide.

"I think we play so much cricket these days that you can turn around a bad performance pretty quickly," he added.

"Unfortunately it's a bit of a trademark of ours, so hopefully it continues."
