Amazing: Chanderpaul and Edwards celebrate
Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit a six off the last ball of the game to give the West Indies an amazing win over Sri Lanka in their first one-day international in Port of Spain.
Chasing Sri Lanka's total of 235 for seven, the West Indies finished with their last pair of Chanderpaul and Fidel Edwards at the crease.
They needed to score 10 from the last two balls and were facing the most successful Sri Lankan bowler of all in Chaminda Vaas.
Chanderpaul hit the penultimate ball for a straight four before crashing a full toss from Vaas over both a despairing Mahela Jayawardene and the mid-wicket boundary for a remarkable victory.
The telling blow took Chanderpaul on to 62 not out, his innings being the mainstay of a West Indies reply which began with 52 from Chris Gayle and featured contributions from Dwayne Bravo (36) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (35).
Gayle swung freely from the start and went to work on Ishara Amerasinghe, hitting three fours and a six off his first two overs before the bowler was withdrawn.
Nuwan Kulasekara, returning for his second spell, then got the breakthrough, trapping an off-balance Devon Smith lbw for 14 with the score on 53.
Now partnered by Sarwan, Gayle now adopted a more conservative approach but still reached 50 with a single off debutant Ajantha Mendis.
But the spinner was rewarded when he dismissed Gayle lbw with the score on 109. Sarwan swiftly followed, edging Kulasekera through to Kumar Sangakkara.
In the same over, Marlon Samuels was trapped plumb for a golden duck.
Bravo ignored the sudden fall of wickets to play in typically aggressive fashion - hitting two sixes - and, along with Chanderpaul, helped the hosts steady themselves.
However, their partnership of 59 was ended when Bravo was run out after a mix-up with his batting partner.
Patrick Browne (15) hit a six over long on before holing out trying for a repeat before Mendis returned to the attack to remove Darren Sammy (1) with a doosra.
Jerome Taylor (9) also hit a six before miscuing one to Chamara Silva to give Mendis a third wicket and Sulieman Benn (0) was run out by Jayawardene.
Chanderpaul reached his half-century with a boundary, but that left Edwards on strike with 13 needed from the final over.
Three singles left Chanderpaul needing 10 off two - a feat he achieved against the odds to prompt scenes of wild celebration.
With the hosts winning the toss and electing to field, Chamara Kapugedera and Chamara Silva put together a record partnership as Sri Lanka recovered from a terrible start.
Three early wickets for Bravo saw the tourists reduced to 49 for five but Kapugedera (95) and Silva (67) then compiled 159 - a sixth-wicket Sri Lankan record in one-day internationals.
Bravo eventually claimed figures of 4-33 off his 10 overs.
