Guptill: debut century
Fourth One Day International
Auckland
New Zealand 275-4 Innings Complete (M J Guptill 122 no, L R P L Taylor 75) v West Indies 64-0
Match abandoned - rain
Martin Guptill's debut century went unrewarded as the fourth one-day international between New Zealand and West Indies was abandoned due to rain.
Guptill scored 122 not out to lead the Black Caps to 275-4 in their 50 overs after being asked to bat at Eden Park.
West Indies had reached 64-0 after 10.3 overs when rain arrived for the second time and the match was called off.
The tourists had already been set a revised target of 235 in 40 overs after an initial hour-long delay, any hopes of a positive result disappeared when the game was halted again following a further 11 balls.
The poor weather took some of the gloss of a superb introduction to international cricket from Guptill, who was one of four changes in the New Zealand line-up.
The 22-year-old Auckland opener took advantage of being dropped on 15, 21 and 33 to bat throughout the innings for an unbeaten 122 from 135 balls - the second highest score by a one-day international debutant after West Indian opener Desmond Haynes' 148 against Australia in 1978.
He struck eight fours and two sixes and shared a stand worth 68 with opening partner Brendon McCullum (26), 144 with Ross Taylor (75) for the third wicket and an unbroken 56 with fellow new-boy Neil Broom (24no) for the fifth wicket.
Seam bowler Lionel Baker was the pick of the visiting attack with 2-29 from his 10 overs.
West Indies openers Chris Gayle (46no) and Sewnarine Chattergoon (17no) made a promising start, racing to 47-0 inside the first nine overs before rain began to fall.
After the first delay, they returned to add a further 17 off 11 balls before the inclement weather returned forcing umpires Gary Baxter and Mark Benson to abandon proceedings.
The series is locked at 1-1 ahead of the final game in Napier on Tuesday.
