Mike Hussey remains doubtful for the World Cup after undergoing surgery on his damaged hamstring.

The 35-year-old will undergo intensive rehabilitation in the next few weeks but faces a race against time to be fit for Australia's opening game of the tournament on February 21.

Hussey picked up the injury in the first one-day international against England on Sunday, but was still included in the 15-man squad for the World Cup by selectors.

"Mike Hussey has returned to Western Australia after surgery to reattach his damaged hamstring tendon," Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said.

"He will now undergo intensive rehabilitation over the coming weeks and how he progresses through this rehabilitation period will ultimately determine his return to cricket.

"As this is an unusual injury in cricket we will be closely monitoring his progress and making appropriate progressions.

"As yet we have not determined a fixed time for his return to cricket training and playing. This will become clearer in the next two or three weeks."

Meanwhile, paceman Mitchell Johnson has been ruled out of the second one-day international in Hobart due to a throat infection.

The left-arm seamer did not make the trip to Tasmania with the rest of the squad but is expected to return for the third game of the series on Sunday.
