Leading Indian Premier League run-scorer Gautam Gambhir says that his best is still to come in the tournament as he eyes adding to his tally.

Left-handed opener Gambhir is leading the tournament so far with 504 runs to his name from 12 matches for the Delhi Daredevils, with an average of 45.81.

Gambhir was the star of India's World Twenty20 final win in South Africa and has continued that form with five half-centuries and a strike rate of 141.97.

Despite the emphasis on big-hitting and improvised shot-making, Gambhir insists the key for him is playing proper cricket shots.

"I love to play drives," Gambhir told the Hindu.

"I get immense satisfaction by just getting into the line and timing the ball than putting force into the shot."

Crude

"There are times when one has to play some crude shots but those are the most forgettable phases of my innings.

"I would rather be consistent than just flashy because that is what international cricket is all about."

Despite Gambhir leading the charts and Delhi skipper Virender Sehwag second with 385 runs in 12 games, the Daredevils are struggling to make the last four of the tournament, but Gambhir is relishing the challenge.

"I relish the pressure because it makes me more responsible," he said.

"My job is to give a good start and what better man than Sehwag to motivate?"

Gambhir says his desire to score runs has made for his success, and is now eyeing a permanent Test spot for India.

"I think it has come from my hunger for runs," he continued.

"I want to make as many runs as possible in all forms of the game.

"I am looking forward to more opportunities because I feel my best is yet to come.

"Honestly I would love to be known as a good Test player."
