South Africa captain Graeme Smith will miss the final three games of the NatWest Series due to a tennis elbow injury.
Smith has been troubled by the problem for some time and, after consulting medics on Thursday, is to rest for the remainder of the tour of England.
Experienced batsman Jacques Kallis will lead the Proteas in Smith's absence.
Kallis, 32, has captained his country on seven previous occasions in one-day internationals.
England lead the five-match NatWest Series 2-0 and require victory in the third game at the Oval on Friday to seal the silverware.
"We have got to come up and play some good cricket," Kallis told Sky Sports News.
"The pressure is on England to win the series. I think it's going to be a tough couple of games."
Coach Mickey Arthur confirmed that Smith's injury had become unmanageable.
"Graeme, from the last Test match and the start of the one-dayers, has been pretty much playing on borrowed time with his elbow unfortunately," said Arthur.
"He tried to battle it out as much as he could but after Trent Bridge we just realised he couldn't go any more.
"We are going to rest and rehab Graeme and get him ready for the start of our home series which is Bangladesh in November and then Australia. Graeme needs the time off now."
