Jayawardene: in-form

Captain Mahela Jayawardene hit his 22nd century as Sri Lanka moved into a strong position on day two of the first Test in Guyana.

Sri Lanka started the day on 269-4 and the West Indies paid the price for perservering with the old ball as they failed to take a wicket before lunch, the tourists eventually declaring on 476-8.

Seamer Jerome Taylor was the pick of a toiling Windies' attack, finishing with figures of 4-110.

Jayawardene, playing in his 94th Test, reached three figures with 13 fours in five and a half hours and 213 deliveries.

It was the Sri Lanka skipper's first century against West Indies but his third in successive Tests following scores of 195 and 213 not out against England in Colombo and Galle last December.

Lively

Chaminda Vaas contributed a lively unbeaten half century to up the scoring rate late on after an attritional batting display by Sri Lanka.

And the left-arm swing bowler quickly proved his worth with the ball, trapping skipper Chris Gale in front to reduce West Indies to 4-1.

That brought Ramnaresh Sarwan to the crease, returning to the international fold after a 10-month absence.

And the forrmer skipper managed to steady the ship somewhat alongside Devon Smith.

He was 21 not out at stumps with Smith unbeaten on eight, although West Indies still trail by a daunting 447 heading into day three.
