Murray: beaten in four sets
Stanislas Wawrinka put paid to Andy Murray's dreams of winning this year's US Open with a 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-3 victory in an epic third-round clash in New York.
The British number one looked on course to reach the second week of the tournament when he battled back from 5-3 down to take the first set.
He then missed the chance to take the second on his own serve as his opponent came storming back to level a topsy-turvy encounter.
From then on Murray crumbled physically and mentally, losing his cool on several occasions whilst also requiring treatment for a number of issues with his body.
Wawrinka also called for the trainer but managed to summon the strength to take the third and fourth sets, both by a 6-3 scoreline. The Swiss' reward is a fourth-round showdown against American Sam Querrey.
For Murray, though, the pain of his injuries will be nothing compared to the agony of seeing another chance to win a maiden grand slam pass him by.
The Scot had been forced to weather an early storm from his opponent, Wawrinka producing some stunning shots to take the opening break.
However Murray showed all his fighting qualities to battle back and force a tie-breaker; one he claimed comfortably after one hour and 10 minutes on court. He then proceeded to seal an early break in the second with a backhand lob.
At 3-0 down the momentum had completely shifted in the fourth seed's favour and although he let slip the advantage, a second break set up the chance to serve out for a commanding two-set advantage.
Instead he promptly lost his serve again and this time couldn't come good in the resulting tie-break, allowing the 25th seed to take it 7-4 and level matters.
Although he lost his opening service game at the start of the third, a rejuvenated Wawrinka reeled off four games on the spin. During this time Murray had grown frustrated and it soon became clear why as he underwent treatment on his left thigh.
The injury appeared to give his rival the upper hand - only for Wawrinka himself to then take a full medical timeout in the sixth game.
He came back on court with his right thigh heavily bandaged but didn't seem to be hampered too much by the problem and despite a second period of medical help soon after, he claimed the third set to get his nose in front.
The fourth saw an exchange of breaks before Wawrinka broke again in the fifth game. Murray just about survived in his next service game and then had the trainer out again, this time to tend to an issue with his neck.
There was to be no magical cure, though, and when he next faced break points he was unable to find a response. The disappointing result means there will be no return this year to the final after suffering his earliest defeat at a slam since being beaten at the same stage of the French Open in 2008.

Oh my goodness what wonderful talentened gracious boys the Fed and Nadal are, mind you they are super champions and you will never hear them making excuses for there losses. They will alyways say, they were beaten by a better player on the day. What galls me Murray is always beaten by a superior player on the day but he will never acknowledge it. Murray is of the mind he only has to turn up on court , NEWS FLASH he has to do what the FED AND NADAL DO, PLAY WITH TOTAL RESPECT FOR THEIR OPPONENTS if Murray takes on board he has NOT won a Grand Slam and show respect to the boys who have he might go further until then he is a has been!!! Del Potro, Djokovic, and Roddick are all Grand winners but we dont get to hear about their great achievements, only the has been, ie Murray and Soderling, anyone can win a 1000 Masters series. Time you all got over yourselves and followed the real professionals, ie Rafa, and the Fed

This is what you get with a country that is outdated and narrow minded in their organisation of the training, talent pool and developement of the game. I find it disgraceful that between the geographical ambience of the English, Celts, Welsh and the Multi-cultural and ethnic communities, we can only boost one person with a possible chance of winning a grand slam. This will always be astonishing! however i do know that this situation will never change untill the people at the helm are replaced, the country as a whole swallow our prde and arrogance, accept we are not good at everything and bring in proven coaches who will be solely responsible for talent spotting and traning all over the country. Develope the facilities in the schools to capture the interest at an early age and not limit to centres that will require huge financial commitment from peers. We will get biggers talents than that of Henman and Murray put together. The Williams Sisters has shown that removing discrimination from the game and getting the talents from all over the country by stopping the elitist practise will improve the prospects of the country in this game. Finally, Andy Murray will never wina slam because of the weight of the expectation. He needs an environment whereby he can play freely without distraction i e the way he plays in the smaller tournaments. IF ONLY THE MEDIA CAN LEAVE HIM ALONE. I WONDER WHY PEOPLE FIND IT FUNNY TO JOKE ABOUT A UNION OF TRIBES THAT HAS CREATED ONE OF THE GREATEST EMPIRES THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN. SIMPLY PUT: YOU ARE NOTHING WITHOUT THE ORDER!

Look lets face it, Andy is a great player and Tim was a great player as well, but when it comes to it, they are always a little short of winning that slam, Andy by a far has a better shot of winning thaN Tim ever did, but lets think about it, Andy has the competition of 2 of the greatest players ever in both Roger and Rafa. I have confidence in Andy in winning a slam one day but when that happens who can tell. i do however feel that he has been unlucky in the US Open with the injury as it happens to all players but remember Rafa has had his fair share of injuries and fell short of winning anything at 1 point with everyone claiming he peaked too early, So lets get a grip and cheer Andy on!! I feel that a lot of English are not happy after what the media said about him not wanting the English to win at the world cup (which is a different sport!!!) . Lets a get grip UK and cheer this lad on and as much as possible as he is our only hope and will be our only hope for the next 50 years or so!! STOP PUTTING OUR UK SPORTSMEN AND WOMAN DOWN!! ENGLISH SCOTTISH WELSH OR IRISH!!!!! IT DOES NOT MATTER!!! GET A GRIP! COME ON ANDY GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR!!! YOU HAVE MOST OF THE UK''S SUPPORT!!! GO ANDY!

Andy Murry can win a grand slam only if he can Drop his attitude and if he stops looking at head to head and then think ''i''ve beaten this person before so i think i can beat im again, he needs to go there and do the best he can Andy Murray, ur the best player in the world..stay that way.

Ann Mead, regarding your comment that Scotland is being funded by England ? Please note, as I am employed in the financial industry, I have yet in my 25 years, to see from Any Source, figures to confirm this. In fact, I have a very strong feeling that it is the other way round, believe me. Come on Andy Murray, you will do it one day.

The British but more so the English love to see people from their own country fail, it beggers belief why they want to see people lose. Murray isnt English he is Scottish but so is Chris Hoy and people cheered him on in the Olympics, also he was voted sports personality of the year. So It baffles me why English people want to see Murray lose, its probably because the bitter English still cant take a joke about Murray not wanting England to win the World Cup, which was said about 6 years ago. You dont see the Spanish media or public praying Nadal loses so they can laugh at him, hes regard as a national icon over there for is success just like the football team. Over in England people actually cant wait til their athletes lose so they can stick the knife in, it pathetic. Im English but if i was an athlete in any given sport I would do my upmost not to represent this country and look for any way possible to represent a country that actually sports their athletes not hope they lose.

The skill is there with Andy Murray, but I think it''s fear in his own mind that holds him back and giving in too easily when the opponent is getting the better of him. Maybe a psychologost could help him. Rafa and Federer don''t give a toss who is at the other side of the net and play to the best of their ability. So, come on Andy, show some mettle and say to hell with it, I''m going to get the better of whoever it is at the other end!

The Sharapova v Wozniaki was by far the most enjoyable and fascinating match of this years US Open. I hope that Murray was watching and learning about the total effort and resolve they displayed in every point. If only he could play at this level!

The problem is this: he''s very good in the smaller tournaments, useless in the big ones. Its a common problem for some sports-people, and its called being British. He can''t even blame the hype because the US Open doesn''t tend to get hyped up in this country by the press, like Wimbledon, the World Cup for footballers, etc etc. Its a shame, we all thought our wait was finally over when Murray came on the scene, but sadly it is not.

Just another o/rated Brit . To compare him to the master class of Federer/Nadal is laughable . Sometimes listening to the British commentators you would think he was a couple of sets up (genius, masterful , heart (joke) ) only to look at the score to see he is match point down . Hard to see him winning a Grand Slam title . In short he is a PALOOKA !

What a shame Murray went out, its ok though because i would like to see "anyone but Murray" win any tennis match. It has nothing to do with the fact he''s from scotland, i just dont like the guy, one of my best friends is scottish and he doesnt like him either. Alos, just because some guy is from scotland (another country) doesnt mean i should like and support him, because i am from England and "british". British means squat to me, i have no loyalty to any country other than England. Hell i might aswell support france and germany because im "European"

I have tried to get this question to the team aroud Andy, but without success todate. Have his medical team checked his thyroid levels, and also his B12 . I have had both 5these factors investigated after complaining of fatiuge. My doctor has had me tested and found I had avery low thyroid level, and also I was unable tomake up my own B12 levels to the normal levels. Both these factors are not applicable to any age group,or the general healt of the individual, but can make for a very drained feeling especially when doing energetic pursuits. If somehow this information can get to the right people, and it might make a difference it may help a very special tennis player. All the very best to Andy in the future. Regards Graham Robertson

I am sick of tennis comentators. "Brilliant shot by Murray". "How does he cover the court so fast?" Can his guy actually hit winners? Especially on he forehand. When you compare his forehand to he likes of Rafa, Roger, Del Potro Soderling and Verdasco i''s quite amusing actually. The reason Murraywon''t ever win a grand slam is: 1. He anger is out. I mean he missed a firs serve and screamed "COME ON!" 2. In a five setter, you cannot play for 4 or 5 hours, slicing the ball over the net then chasing it down. No-one can. Also his service percentage is shocking so all the big hitters smack his second. Saying Murray will never win a grand slam? Bit harsh. I''d say 50/50. Maybe even 60/40 against him unforunately. If you compare Roger and Rafas practice o Andy''s, its laughable. Murray mucking about with his football games, then the big two with a couple hours of intence hitting, volleying and serving. The coach needs to be calling the shots, not be your play mate. Someone who demandes respect. My way or the high way attitude is in order, because clearly Murray doesn''t listen t reason. TEAM MURRAY OUT SO WE CAN ACTUALLY HAVE A GRAND SLAM WINNER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 75 ODD YEARS! Also the media need to back of. The guy is only 23, and people think its over. Fed is 29 and still competing up there. Murray''s still got about 2 or 3 years unil he peaks, maybe by then Rogers gone and Rafa won lots so loses motivaion!

Federer was 21 nearly 22 when he won his first grand slam. Murray is 23 and already so many people are writing him off. More fool you, his best years are ahead of him. Does he have the potential? of course he does as he has beaten every other top player in the world at some point. You cant play your best tennis in every tournament and thats what you need to do to win a slam. On a similar note Phil Mickleson didn''t win his first major until he was 34, 12 years after he turned pro and look at him now. As for the whole scottish english thing, im not interested its irrelevent.
