Swansea 3-0 West Brom
Soccer Saturday analysis
"It is going to be a bunfight down there- there will be eight or nine teams fighting it out. But some of these teams have great belief in their abilities and West Brom could be down there if they don't get their attitude right"
Phil Thompson Quotes of the week
Phil Thompson watched Swansea City register their first win in the Premier League following a comprehensive 3-0 victory over West Brom at the Liberty Stadium.
Scott Sinclair neatly converted a penalty to score Swansea's first goal in the Premier League, and the club's first in the English top flight since 1983, and they extended their lead against the run of play when Leroy Lita headed in from a well-worked corner.
Shortly after the break Nathan Dyer delivered a third for the hosts, beating Ben Foster with a low drive.
"Swansea thoroughly deserved it, said Phil Thompson on Soccer Saturday.
"Scoring the first goal got the monkey of their back - it was their first goal in the Premier league. It was a fabulous performance.
"They all worked for each other and they worked hard for the ball. It must have been 15-20 minutes before West Brom got out of their own half never mind a shot on goal."
The only concern for the Swans was a nasty head injury suffered by full-back Neil Taylor in an aerial clash with Peter Odemwingie which saw the striker booked.
"In the second half their was a terrible injury to Neil Taylor when he had a clash of heads with Odemwingie," added Thompson.
"I hope he is alright, there was a lot of blood and they put a neckbrace on him and gave him oxygen - hopefully it was just a preacuation and he is ok.
"The crowd were absolutely amazing - from start to fionsih they did nto stop singing, it was quite an emotional day down there."
"For West Brom - well I wrote one word attitude. If the West Broms of this world think they can go to these teams and just turn up, well you can't.
"The attitude of nearly all of those players was dreadful and that helped Swansea win the game."
Thompson also believes that on this performance Swansea may be able to survive the relegation battle that, on this performance, could include West Brom.
"I think there is a chance of Swansea surviving - you wonder where the goals will come from though," explained Thompson.
"Besides them scoring three goals today there have not been an abundance of chances for them.
"It is going to be a bunfight down there- there will be eight or nine teams fighting it out. But some of these teams have great belief in their abilities and West Brom could be down there if they don't get their attitude right."
