The Team Northumbria netball franchise is involved in netball from grassroots level right through to the team which plays in the Netball Superleague. Team Northumbria is supported by Northumbria University in Newcastle-upon-Tyne as part of its overall commitment to sport in the North-East. Northumbria University is very ambitious for its sporting future; this ambition is clearly demonstrated by the University’s recent decision to commit £20million on a new sporting complex (due to open in September 2009) which will have a significant impact on sport for students and the wider community.
The Team Northumbria Superleague team is coached by England Assistant Coach Denise Egan, who has assembled a talented and ambitious squad of players for this season’s Superleague. In her quest for improvement, Egan has even recruited a trio of players from New Zealand – Kiley Hikawai, Jodi Tod and Nikki van Beek - who have immediately made their mark and become quite the home crowd favourites! Already this season there have been some incredible games including Team Northumbria’s 42-34 win over the Celtic Dragons which was live on Sky Sports and in front of a packed crowd of over 1100 people at Gateshead Leisure Centre, one of the largest crowds for any franchise this season.
