Slim Pickings, twice placed in the Grand National, has been put down after breaking a leg on the gallops.

Trainer Tom Taaffe, who saddled the horse to finish a close third in 2007 and fourth in last year's renewal, revealed the sad news on Tuesday.

"He was just doing a routine canter and broke a hind pastern. It's a very sad time for everyone," said Taaffe.

"He was a great servant to us and it's such a sad thing to happen. Unfortunately these things do happen in racing and accidents are always out there."

The 10-year-old was last seen when unplaced in the Lexus Chase over Christmas and was being prepared for another tilt at the Aintree marathon in April.
