Steele Tango
Trainer Roger Teal claimed a first Group race victory at Newmarket on Friday when Steele Tango rallied gamely to snatch victory in the Thurlow Nunn Standen Darley Stakes.
The four-year-old proved a big flop in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe last time out but belied his 25-1 starting price to take command over a furlong out under Liam Keniry.
And despite coming under a strong challenge from Glass Harmonium inside the final furlong he held on by a head in the Group Three contest.
"That was a fantastic performance, and he has really deserved it. What a way to end the year!" said Teal.
"I knew he would come back as that is his main quality and he has a heart as big as a lion.
"Everyone was so disappointed two weeks ago, but he managed to get in the race today.
"There was a Listed race I had in mind for him at the end of the month, but he was so well after the Arc that we had to run him, and he could be over the top in two weeks.
"This isn't his trip but he loves a stiff finish, and we might have a go at the Hong Kong Cup now."
Ryan Moore picked the wrong one in the Lanwades Stud Severals Stakes later on the card, opting for the disappointing 9-4 favourite Leocorno, while Jimmy Fortune took advantage on a chance ride aboard the Queen's 12-1 chance Enticement.
Despite a 110-day absence, she repelled Pachattack by a short head.
Her Majesty's representative, Sir Michael Oswald, said: "She showed a lot of guts there.
"They were worried the ground would be a bit fast for her but they took a chance and it worked.
"I wouldn't think she will run again this year and she probably won't stay in training."
