Askar Tau: At his best on fast ground
Marcus Tregoning is hoping Askar Tau will get his favoured ground conditions when he lines up in the Artemis Goodwood Cup on Thursday.
The seven-year-old is a feature in the big staying races and was not beaten far when fifth in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on his penultimate start.
Back in 2009, the son of Montjeu was eighth in this race before going on to lift the Lonsdale and Doncaster Cups.
Tregoning said: "He is in good form but he has never had his ground this year.
"He is a proper top of the ground horse so we just have to hope we get normal fast summer ground at Goodwood.
"He ran a great race in the Gold Cup at Ascot, like he did the previous year, and realistically he will always have an each-way chance, but the faster the ground is, the better his chance will be.
"He was quite disappointing on his only start at Goodwood and it can be difficult because some of them just don't like it.
"It's just a matter of trying to get him to travel properly and not get too far out of his ground, which happened at Ascot."
