Double world champion Fernando Alonso has agreed to leave the McLaren Formula One team.
McLaren have confirmed that Alonso, who joined them at the start of the year from Renault, is free to discuss a move to a rival team for next season.
Alonso had two years left to run on his contract with the team, but relations between the Spaniard and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton have been strained.
His relationship with team boss Ron Dennis has also deteriorated over the course of the season, leading to a parting of ways.
"Since I was a boy I had always wanted to drive for McLaren, but sometimes in
life things do not work out," said Alonso in a statement released by the team.
Alonso's next destination remains a mystery.
While rumours suggest a return to Renault is on the cards, AS recently reported that McLaren will only let Alonso out of his contract if he moves to one of F1's minor teams.
And although Williams can't really be considered a minion, the Grove-based team could be Alonso's most likely destination as he seeks a one-year contract before trying his luck with Ferrari.
