Renault are investigating the cause of the engine failure that robbed Fernando Alonso of a points finish at the Spanish GP.

Although he started second on the grid, Alonso lost positions during the first round of pitstops, dropping down to fifth place.

The Spaniard, though, was still on course for his third points-scoring result of the season when an engine failure on Lap 35 robbed him of the opportunity.

It was a disappointing outcome for the double world champion and his team who showed signs of coming back from their early season lack of pace.

Renault's engine chief Rob White says the team will now launch a full investigation into the failure.

"There was no warning Fernando's engine failure was coming," White told Autosport. "And how we go about resolving the problem doesn't change.

"We need the same discipline and the same speed of reaction, to decide what counter-measures might be required."
