Heidfeld: Changed circumstances
Nick Heidfeld says BMW's decision to withdraw its team from Formula One was "totally unexpected".
The German car manufacturer confirmed on Wednesday that it would cease its F1 operation at the end of the season after four years as a fully-fledged manufacturer.
Heidfeld, who has been with BMW Sauber since their inception in 2006, admits he was taken aback by the announcement.
"BMW's decision no longer to compete in Formula One was totally unexpected," he said on his official website.
"I feel very sorry for the members of the team with whom it has been my privilege to work over the years. I would like to thank all of them for their tremendous support and for everything we have achieved together."
If BMW fail to find a buyer in the next few months then Heidfeld could find himself on the sidelines next season.
The 32-year-old, though, insists he will do everything he can to stay in the sport.
"I'm not going to lose sight of my ambition to reach the top in Formula One" Heidfeld added. "I'll be doing my best to support the team and ensure that we get the best possible finish to the season.
"As far as my personal future is concerned, we'll now be continuing discussions under these changed circumstances."
Heidfeld currently lies 13th in the drivers' championship with six points.
