Button: title success
Jenson Button has clinched the Formula One World Championship after finishing fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.
The Brawn GP driver came through the field from 14th place on the grid - Button producing a fine display to move forward but also profiting from a number of incidents on the opening lap.
Team-mate Rubens Barrichello, who had appeared favourite to take their title battle to the final race in Abu Dhabi after qualifying on pole position in Saturday's rain-drenched session, could only finish eighth after suffering a late puncture.
The race was won by Red Bull's Mark Webber, with BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica second ahead of outgoing world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Webber's team-mate Sebastian Vettel saw his own slim title challenge end despite finishing fourth ahead of Button, while Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen finished sixth ahead of Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi and Barrichello.
Sunday's result also means that Brawn GP clinch the constructors' title at the first attempt - the team having only secured their future following Honda's withdrawal from the sport less than a month before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
Speaking in the wake of his awful qualifying session, Button said he would need to produce something special in the race if he was to take the title with one race to spare and his body language once the lights went out suggested a man who meant business.
However, a champion also needs luck and Button got plenty on a chaotic opening lap which saw him thread his way through a number of incidents in the field.
With Barrichello earning the approval of his home crowd by taking the lead at the opening corner, Webber and Raikkonen jostled for second place - the latter then losing part of his front wing on the back straight after clipping the back of the Australian's car.
Raikkonen then almost had a coming together with Force India's Adrian Sutil who, backing off, was collected by Toyota's Jarno Trulli as Renault's Fernando Alonso too became involved.
With the safety car deployed, Raikkonen pitted and was lucky to continue when the McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen - who had himself spun at the back of the field on the opening lap - left its pit box trailing a fuel rig, which doused the Ferrari in fuel - a flash fire briefly erupting.
Button had already climbed to ninth and once racing resumed he set about making up further places.
It seemed easy at first, with Renault's Romain Grosjean and Williams driver Kazuki Nakajima dispatched on the fifth lap. However, Button's progress was then halted by Toyota debutant Kamui Kobayashi.
After one aborted passing attempt at the Senna S corner - Button complaining that the youngster was weaving and blocking - he finally claimed sixth place by lap 25 with another driver ahead of him, Nico Rosberg, retiring two laps later.
By this stage it had already become apparent that Barrichello might be heading in the opposite direction, however, and despite putting in a series of fast laps ahead of his opening pit stop on lap 20 both Webber and Kubica leapfrogged him.
Button climbed as high as second prior to his opening stop on lap 29, two laps before Kobayashi made another cameo when, having made a stop himself, he veered in front of Nakajima on the back straight - the latter lucky to escape after his car took to the grass and briefly became airborne at approximately 190mph.
Hamilton and Vettel joined Button in making inroads from the back of the grid and having taken on board a heavy load of fuel under the safety car, the McLaren star was making his presence increasingly felt.
By lap 33 he was harrassing Barrichello for fifth place and with Button passing Buemi for ninth one lap later it became clear by half-distance that the race was moving towards the Englishman.
With Vettel and Kubica both having made stops, Barrichello was back up to second by lap 47 but his 15.8-second deficit to Webber told its own story.
He stopped again on lap 50 and with Button making his last stop five laps later, the places they held - third and sixth - had tilted matters decisively in Button's favour.
The final nail in Barrichello's title bid was hammered home by Hamilton on lap 61, the latter closing up behind the Brawn on the start-finish straight to pass into the Senna S.
Barrichello also picked up a left rear puncture around this time and needed an unscheduled pit stop as his challenge, which had promised so much less than 24 hours earlier, finally evaporated.

Hmmm. I have to say that some of the uncharitable comments here have surprised me somewhat. Good for those who have congratulated both Jenson & Brawn!! People - we have a UK F1 champion again, & that's something to be very proud of. I'd like to assume that anyone in these columns who's criticised isn't British & therefore patriotic. I'm probably wrong which saddens me somewhat. Anyway - you can be the best driver in the world (which Jenson is), if you 'aint got the best car, it matters not, you won't win!! Jenson had a good car at the beginning of the season & made the most of it. That's what he's paid to do. As for his race yesterday, I was almost in tears at the stellar quality of that drive. He was formidable!!! A worthy champion people & don't let any Brit deny it. A worthy constructor's championship also to a British team led by a Brit. I'm damned proud of the lot of them. Icing on the cake?? Rubens (whom I also like) wins in Dubais & comes second in the championship - a Brawn 1 & 2 next race???? Great!!! No team orders of course but, you never know. Further icing?? Jenson for Sports Personality Of The Year - he deserves it.

Jenson, average driver in a very good car. Any one of the top 10 drivers would have wrapped this up much earlier than he did. We saw how good he was in the seond half of the season, when all the other cars became more competative, he was also the luckiest driver for the second half of the season (please don't say: you make your own luck) . Everything went his way.

Surely Button could still lose the championship? What if Vettel wins the last race and Button picks up penalty points?

Well Done Jenson, a worthy champion. What is wrong with those people that continue to knock him. Look at him as a person, and not a machine. Jensen has emotions and fears like we all do, and when other cars started to match him for pace, then that would corncern everyone one in the position Jenson was after winning the first few races. That did affect his qualifying, but once settling into the races themselves he shone through. Jensen is a true racer much like Nigel Mansell, and after all that's what people go to see, RACING. Well done to Ross Brawn and all the team, it was very emotional day for millions, and the few sceptics can go and lick their wounds

jock harris, wash your ears out friend, listen to button on the radio properly and you will hear him praise the whole team, and as for being upset that barrichello didnt win the title, just shows that you cant handle an englishman winning, green eyed monsters all the way for you

Congrats to Jenson Button! Not the most awesome champion, but the team was the best this year, weird strategy with Rubens though. This is not the 1st time button's had a competitive car,1st time he made use of 1 or more he had an superior early season car that he made use of.

Jock Harris, which race were you watching? The first time Button spoke was on the pit radio when he sang "WE are the champions". He then went on to comment to his team "WE'RE world champions!" and to thank them all. From then on he praised his team at every opportunity that I saw. He also accepted the compliments given to him with good grace, and lets face it, he deserves it. A worthy champion.

Jason O'Neill... Thank you... thought i was on my own on this one.. Great, he won... congrats... but how he won... no risks...play's it safe in every single race bar overtaking a few cars yesterday... Compare him to Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel... guy's who drive the car to the limit... horrible horrible way to win It's called F1 for a reason... put him in equal car's with any of these guy's... he'd be left for dead

Not sure what George Clement is talking about - Button is far from modest! The first thing that Hamilton did when he won was praise the whole team - Button did not mention them once, and in said that he thought he deserved the championship!! Hardly a modest thing to say for someone who has not won a race in months. So I say well done to BRAWN GP because they deserve the credit, and I am just upset it was not their other driver that won the title.

Well done to Jenson, coming from a city of only 25,000, of course that's in a country of 62 million, compared to the winner of the race who came from a country of only 22 million ;-)

off-topic I know but I hope raikkonen gets another top drive for next year, another good result from him in a dog of a car to create a string of about 9 high class performances...proving he is very much at the top of the top flight. Weird if this former WDC doesn't get a top seat for next year!!

if webber was not the most unlucky driver ever he would be champion, having to play second fiddle to vettel, and not scoring a point in the last 5 prior to this he would be the champ, button is no good, but it's the way the sport has always been who ever has the best car wins, hamilton showed a little bit of promise towards the end, but it proved that the only reason he won was because he had the best car last year, button also needed all the luck in the world with everyone pulling out in front of him, his last win this year, will infact be his last win ever

After so much hype when he first came into the sport, years without a winning a grandprix let alone a world title Jenson Button has finally done it. What a year for him last year he won a grandprix, then his team looked likely to close only for a last minute rescue package and now he's the King of F1 congratulations Button, Credit must go to Ross Brawn for makinh this happen.

What a fantastic performance by Jenson today and becoming world champion was just the ultimate crowning glory, but what the Brawn team have done this year really ought to give hope to the new teams coming into the sport next year. Congratulations Jenson and the rest of the Brawn team!

Great season and congratulations to Jensen Button, Ross Brawn and the whole team "GREAT EFFORT". I hope Jason O'neil one day gets a life after his comment. Was it the car or the driver that got Michael Schmacher 7 world championships. Probably "YES" I think.
