Sebastian Vettel believes he can still win this year's Formula One world title despite failing to score any points at an eventful Belgian Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver was trying to grab second place from Jenson Button at Spa on Sunday when he lost control under braking and slammed into the side of the reigning champion.

Button was forced to retire on the spot but Vettel continued after a front-wing change. However, the German could only manage to bring his car home in 15th place.

Vettel was left rueing his error but is adamant the 31-point deficit he now has to Lewis Hamilton in the standings can be overhauled.

"Let's wait and see. There are still six races to come and we have all seen how quickly things can change," he said.

"I know I should have been on the podium at least. But everything is still possible. I can still make it happen. We'll have to see what we can do at the next races."

Collision

The 23-year-old expressed his regret over the incident that took out Button but wants to put the collision behind him.

"What happened, happened and we can't change it now," Vettel added.

"Obviously I'm not proud of it. I lost the car going over a bump as I was braking and unfortunately hit Jenson. I'm sorry for him."

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh had some harsh words for Vettel, who he believes is forging a reputation as a crasher.

He said: "Sebastian is getting into a bad habit. He is a crash kid. It was not what you would expect to see in Formula One. It was more reminiscent of junior formulae."

"I realise what happened wasn't intentional, but it was a bit of a strange mistake," Whitmarsh added.

"If he was going for the inside he had about three inches to sneak down there, so God knows what he thought he was doing, but he lost it."
