Sir Stirling Moss has belittled Michael Schumacher's achievements in Formula One, labelling his status as a seven-time world champion as "misleading".

Schumacher has suffered a disappointing return to the sport this season after an absence of three seasons as he was consistently outpaced by Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Many expected more from the 41-year-old, who holds many of F1's most significant records, including 91 race wins as well as his collection of titles.

But Moss, who never won a world title but is still regarded as one of the greatest drivers in history, says the statistics are not a true reflection of the former Ferrari driver's ability.

"The fact he was seven-time world champion ruins what being a world champion is all about," Moss said.

Flawed

The 81-year-old added: "He is flawed. He was all over the place. We never saw him at his best when he had a really good driver alongside him.

"We never saw him in a Ferrari with a driver of similar talent really, so I think that (his number of titles) is misleading."

Although Schumacher has attracted criticism during his comeback season, Moss does not think the German regrets deciding to come out of retirement.

"I don't think he regrets coming back, but it was ill-advised. He did so well," he said.

"The most important contribution he had was dragging Ferrari back to the top. But the fact he is carrying on next year is interesting, although quite frankly, I wouldn't be worried if I was up against him."
