Di Montezemolo: Against 2013 changes
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo says the proposed Formula One engine changes for 2013 are "a bit pathetic".
In December the World Motor Sport Council approved plans to drop the current normally-aspirated 2.4-litre V8 engines for energy-efficient 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbos.
The new system is set to run in conjunction with KERS, which will make its return to the sport in 2011 after a one-year absence.
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has already voiced his displeasure at the proposed engine regulations and now di Montezemolo has also expressed his discontent.
"We will not be building any (four-cylinder engines) for our street cars," he told Auto Motor und Sport.
"For the top class of racing it sounds a bit pathetic. Why couldn't we have a V6 turbo? We should not confuse affordable with cheap."
Di Montezemolo hopes to delay the introduction of the new rules but admits that he would need support from the other teams to make that happen.
He added: "If there is the slightest possibility to delay the four cylinder, I will look for it. We see a chance. We need unity."

they are still going to make the engine rev to 12000 rpm and have 700 bhp.people are complaining about it wont sound the same.have you heard a car rev to 12? it still screams.and the cars use upto 35% less fuel.they are being more relevant to the car industry and just getting to grips with a greener future in motoring.

I agree with ferrari I mean come on ! what a joke... the V8 shouldn't be replaced with a 1.6 turbo, also if F1 goes to these poxy engines then we all might aswel start watching the american le man series as it will most probably be more intresting... so if FOTA is about something they must all come together and agree that the 1.6 is a REALLY bad move.

i think that they should bring back the v10 but let each team pick there own size engines as it will show how far they can push the technology and not just with engines

Has everyone else forgotten the 1.5 litre turbo era where there were 4-cylinder engines? I appreciate these cars won't be that fast or powerful, but the BMW turbo engine, the most powerful of the lot, was a 4-cylinder! I agree I'd prefer a V6 or the current formula, but it's not going to turn F1 into a joke...

An absolute travesty..... There is a reason why F1 is the pinnacle of motorsports. If the WMSC starts to strip away the very essence of the sport, F1 will become a caricature. The 2.4 litre V8 are screamers and we love it. Substituting that for a 1.6 litre 4 cylinder turbo is bad news!

What sort of noise will these engines make - I suspect it won't be anywhere near the scream of an 8 cylinder

I can fully apreciated that the premise of the new 1.6 four cylinder engines is that F1 technology does find its way into our road cars, however the WRC will be developing high tech 1.6 turbo's that can fill that role. Formula 1 is the pinnacle of world motorsport, and the noise of an F1 V8 makes a insiprational noise that no 4 cylinder engine will ever match. The teams should unite to save the magic of F1 for the millions of fans around the world!

This will turn formula 1 into a joke,im sure the vast majority of fans will be turned off to the series and will start to look elsewhere . there is so many rule changes each year that its hard to keep up, F1 always was the technology leader for the car manufacturers to follow, seems its going the opposite now, the death of F1 is iminent

these engine changes are pathetic! F1 is about the fastest engines teams can produce with the best drivers, 1.6 turbos as a formula 1 car? really? stick with the V8's, this is world class motor racing not a legal boy racer sport

I simply can not understand why the rules of F1 must be altered so dramatically year after year; it's quit a turn-off! I am with Ferrari on this one & find it a shame that the #1 motor sport in the world is changing it's engine formula for 4 cylinders. American racing seems much more interesting these days.

Couldn't agree more. F1 is supposed to be the cutting edge of Motorsport. 4 cylinder 1.6 engines? Why not just race minis?
