Wasps have made a double signing on Thursday, with Dave Walder's surprise move overshadowing Simon Shaw's contract extension.

Fly-half Walder was released at the end of last season by Newcastle Falcons, allowing Ian McGeechan to swoop for his signature.

The former England man has signed a three-year deal at the Causeway Stadium, marking a new chapter in his career after 110 appearances for the Falcons.

Walder commented: "I am really excited about my move to Wasps. It's a fresh start for me and I am looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead.

"Wasps' setup, in terms of conditioning and development of players, is second to none, and with their help I think I can improve as a player."

Walder has been the curse of Wasps over the past two seasons, twice securing last-gasp wins over the Londoners at Kingston Park.

On his day, he can be a highly-influential stand-off, a fact that has not escaped McGeechan.

"Dave is an important addition to the squad, giving us experience and depth in the no 10 position and as a reliable goal kicker.

"He is a talented player and a long term acquisition for us, so we want to spend a bit of time developing the undoubted potential that he has."

Walder's move comes after Rob Laird left the club to join Northampton Saints on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Shaw has prolonged his career with the former Premiership champions, taking him into his 10th season at the club.

A testimonial will now follow for the authoritative lock, who was delighted with his new two-year deal.
