Fluminense defender Thiago Silva is close to signing for Spanish side Villarreal according to the player's agent.

The 24-year-old has also attracted interest from both AC Milan and Jose Mourinho's Inter but the Brazilian remains locked in talks with Villarreal.

Thiago Silva caught the attention of a host of European clubs with his performances in the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he helped Brazil to a bronze medal.

The defender first moved to Europe in 2004 when he signed for Porto but his time at the club was plagued by injuries.

After enduring another torrid spell on the sidelines at Dynamo Moscow in 2005 Thiago Silva returned home to ply his trade with the club he supported as a boy.

Development

The Brazilian international has not looked back making 138 league appearances for Fluminense scoring 14 goals in the process.

Paulo Tornetto, the player's representative said: "The negotiations have been going on very well with Villarreal.

"The only thing that is delaying the transfer is that we haven't reached an agreement with the way in which the transfer will be paid.

"We like the proposal that Villarreal has done and this week we will be talking with their board members.

"The player is happy with the idea of playing in Spain so he is waiting for these details to get resolved so then he will be able to sign his contract.

"He hasn't signed anything with anyone but this week the player even had the chance to talk with Llaneza (Villarreal's director of sport) and he is happy for this chance."
