Rangers have accepted a bid from Birmingham City for their disposed captain Barry Ferguson.

Blues boss Alex McLeish has made linking up with Ferguson, who he managed during his stint at the Ibrox helm, a transfer priority over the summer.

Ferguson, 31, will discuss terms with the English Premier League club after Birmingham had an offer thought to be around £1million accepted.

If terms are agreed, Ferguson will return to the top flight in England four-and-a-half years after a spell at Blackburn Rovers.

And if the midfielder leaves Rangers, he will follow Brahim Hemdani, Christian Dailly and Graeme Smith out the Ibrox door this summer.

Controversy

Ferguson's Ibrox career brought plenty of success but it was latterly shrouded in controversy.

He was fined and stripped of the Rangers captaincy last season following a breach of discipline while on Scotland duty in April following a World Cup qualifying defeat by Holland in Amsterdam.

The late night drinking incident at a Loch Lomond Hotel also led to an end to his international career.

Ferguson was dropped by Rangers manager Walter Smith but returned for their last three games of the season as they won back the SPL title from Old Firm rivals Celtic for the first time in four years.

The former Ibrox youth player was also in the Rangers side that lifted the Homecoming Scottish Cup with a 1-0 win over Falkirk at Hampden.

Despite positive noises coming from Rangers assistant coach Ally McCoist, Ferguson's future has been in doubt all summer and it looks like it will be away from Govan.
