Sky Sports News understands Middlesbrough have agreed a fee with Rangers for midfielder Kevin Thomson.

Rangers boss Walter Smith revealed earlier this month that Middlesbrough had expressed an interest in the Scotland international.

Smith was keen to keep the former Hibernian star, but admitted every player at Ibrox has their price due to the club's financial problems.

Now both clubs are understood to have agreed a fee in the region of £2million for Thomson with the 25-year-old heading to Teesside for talks and a medical.

If Thomson completes his move to Middlesbrough he will become the latest recruit from Scotland with Boro boss Gordon Strachan having already signed Celtic old boys Barry Robson, Chris Killen, Willo Flood, Scott McDonald and Stephen McManus, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd and Lee Miller from Aberdeen.

Strachan has been busy in the transfer market this summer having signed Boyd, McManus and Nicky Bailey as they look to build a side capable of winning promotion to the Premier League next season.
