Gavin Rae has given his hometown club Aberdeen hope they could still land his signature.

The 33-year-old is on the lookout for a new club after being released by Cardiff City at the end of last season.

On Tuesday Dons boss Craig Brown admitted his fear of losing out on the midfielder, who has also been offered a deal by Charlton.

But Rae insists money is not everything to him at this stage of his career and he could still move north of the border.

He told the Daily Record: "There is still a chance I will go to Aberdeen. I'm planning to speak to Craig Brown when I get back from holiday.

"But Charlton have also made me an offer so it is only right I speak to them. I will make a final decision after that.

"I said before that it won't come down to how much I am paid. All I want to do is get back to playing regular first team football and the idea of coming home to play for the club I supported as a boy is very appealing.

"I also owe a lot to Craig Brown because he awarded me my first cap. Aberdeen are the only Scottish club I'm interested in joining."

Dons boss Brown added: "When I got in touch with Gavin's agent he told me two English clubs wanted him and we can't compete with the money on offer down there.

"But until he reaches a decision, we can only hope that the attraction of playing regular football here will persuade him to join us."
