The on-off saga of Gary O'Neil's move to Middlesbrough has been concluded with the midfielder agreeing a switch to The Riverside.

Skysports.com understands the Portsmouth midfielder has now joined Gareth Southgate's men.

The terms of the deal have yet to be revealed but it is thought the fee will be based on appearances.

A delighted Southgate told Sky Sports News: "We've trailed Gary for 18 months now and we're absolutely chuffed to have him.

"Gary had an injury before the end of last season and had a little operation and we needed to be sure everything was ok with that - that's why we had a bit of a delay.

Earlier in the day, the deal appeared to be dead after O'Neil failed a medical.

But the two parties worked hard into the night to resurrect the move.
