Espanyol have completed the signing of goalkeeper Cristian Alvarez from Rosario Central in a move that looks set to spell the end of Carlos Kameni's time at the club.

The Blanc i Blau have reached a deal that will see them pay €600,000 for the 22-year-old and could mean that their current custodian will now be free to make a big money move abroad.

Kameni has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur and has received interest from Manchester United too and Espanyol's dip into the transfer market means that a move could be on the cards very soon.

Alvarez will fly to Catalunya within the next week to undergo a medical and put pen-to-paper on a five year deal and he can go straight in to the squad as he holds a European passport.

Espanyol's sporting director Paco Herrera was pleased to have completed the deal and said that the Argentinian's arrival meant that the competition within the squad would remain.

"We need to have two first team goalkeepers and he is one of them," he said, not alluding to whether Kameni or Inaki Lafuente would be the other.

"He will have to work hard to earn a regular place in the squad, but from what we know of him he is a very good goalkeeper.

Rosario's Manuel Usandizaga believes that Espanyol have made a good move and that the switch will also benefit Alvarez.

"He is a very good goalkeeper and Espanyol should provide him with the structure to continue improving," he stated.
