Central defender Carlos Matheu has sealed a $3.3million (£1.6million) transfer from Argentinean outfit Independiente to Lokomotiv Moscow.

The player also had a proposal from Greek side Olympiakos but decided to move to Russia because he was offered a four-year contract.

He was also attracted by the prospect of UEFA Champions League football next term, as well as the chance to play in an up-and-coming league.

Good opportunity

He told Sportia: "This transfer is a very good opportunity for my career.

"I got seduced by the chance of playing in Russian football because I know that now it's a league much more important than a few years ago.

"Lokomotiv is going to play in the Champions League and even their national team has played in the semi-finals if the European Cup so it's important for my career to play in an important league."
