Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of Ajax defender Johnny Heitinga on a five-year contract.

The Spanish club agreed a deal to sign Heitinga in March and he will be presented to the media at the Vicente Calderon on Thursday.

Heitinga, who can play at right-back or in the centre of defence, has cost the Madrid club around €10million.

The 24-year-old represented Holland at Euro 2008 and has appeared 39 times for his country.

Madrid will play in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round having finished fourth in La Liga last season.

Coach Javier Aguirre has also brought in Czech Republic defender Tomas Ujfalusi, France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, French striker Florent Sinama Pongolle and Brazilian midfielder Paulo Assuncao.
