Gomez: Highly-rated
Roberto Martinez has made Espanyol playmaker Jordi Gomez his first signing as manager of Wigan Athletic.
As revealed by skysports.com earlier this month Martinez was keen on signing Gomez and now he has landed his man.
The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at Swansea, under Martinez's stewardship, and has opted to rekindle his partnership with his fellow Spaniard.
The highly-coveted midfielder was believed to be on the wish list of a number of Premier League sides, as well as numerous clubs on the continent.
He has, however, taken the opportunity to join Wigan and will pen a three-year deal with the Latics upon the completion of a medical.
"Jordi is a real quality player, [has] a great left foot and is extremely pleasing on the eye as a player," Martinez told the club's official website.
"I have no doubts in my mind that he will do well in the Premier League.
"I think he can go all the way in the game, and to play in the Premier League is the next step in his career.
He added: "To be honest I was surprised when we managed to get him at Swansea last season, but now that he is available, he is a player I really wanted to bring on board. He can play several positions and will score goals from midfield.
"We are a little light in numbers and I want to press ahead and bring in some more real quality into the squad.
"You need to have healthy competition for places and we must make sure that the players coming in are of the correct standard and mental attitude for us. Watch this space."
