Oldham Athletic have beaten off competition from elsewhere to seal the signing of Rangers midfielder Dean Furman.

The South African has agreed a three-year deal at Boundary Park after the two clubs reached an agreement over a compensation package.

Furman spent last season on-loan at Bradford City where he impressed enough for Bantams boss Stuart McCall to want to sign him permanently.

But Latics boss Dave Penney has won the race for his signature and he is delighted to have secured the services of the former Chelsea youngster.

"You can't argue with Dean's pedigree," Penney told the club's official website.

"Chelsea - Rangers, while also being on the brink of breaking into the South Africa team.

"He did very well with Bradford and I'm confident he will continue his progress at the higher level."

Furman, 21, began his career at Stamford Bridge before moving to Scottish giants Rangers in 2006.

Although he failed to establish himself in Rangers' first team he has already been recognised at international level having been named as an unused substitute for South Africa.
