Sunderland have completed the signing of Paraguay international Paulo Da Silva on a three-year contract.

The defender has agreed a move to the Stadium of Light after his contract with Mexican side Toluca expired.

He had been expected to join the Black Cats, but there were reports of late interest from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

However, he has now clinched his switch to Wearside and manager Steve Bruce is confident the 29-year-old will be a hit.

"I'm delighted to have signed a player of Paulo's experience," Bruce told the club's official website.

"He is captain of his country and has played at the highest level in South America, so will bring leadership qualities to our side."

Da Silva, who was linked with Celtic last year, becomes Bruce's second signing since taking charge of Sunderland.

Over the weekend, Bruce won the battle to sign Fraizer Campbell after the striker arrived from Manchester United in a deal which could rise to £6million.
