Wigan have confirmed that Shakhtar Donetsk striker Marcelo Moreno has joined them on a six-month loan.

The 22-year-old will now see out the remainder of the 2009/10 campaign at the DW Stadium, subject to being granted a visa and international clearance.

The Bolivia international joined Shakhtar in the summer of 2008, penning a five-year contract, but struggled to settle in the Ukraine.

He was loaned to Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen for the 2009/10 campaign, but the Germans agreed to terminate that agreement on Friday.

That opened the door for Wigan to make their move and Latics boss Roberto Martinez feels the South American will prove to be a useful acquisition.

"We knew we needed more competition in the forward area and now we have Victor Moses and Marcelo Moreno," he told the club's official website.

Potential

"Shakhtar paid €9million for him 18 months ago, which shows you how highly he is regarded, and he has all the ingredients to become a big player in this country.

"He still needs to find his feet in Europe, but we are confident that this will be at Wigan.

"He is young, a superb athlete, good in the air, technically good with both feet and he will add something new to the squad."

Moreno added: "Roberto Martinez sold the club to me and I am determined to come to England and make an impression.

"I want to do everything I can to get in the team and I am now looking forward to meeting all my new team-mates and fighting for my place."

Marcelo will not be eligible for Wigan's FA Cup fourth round replay against Notts County on Tuesday.
