Sunderland have signed Tottenham defender Alan Hutton on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Scotland right-back has struggled to live up to his £9million price tag since switching from Rangers two years ago.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been unconvinced with Hutton this season, limiting him to just one start and seven substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Hutton will have another chance to prove his credentials with the Black Cats and could feature for them against Wigan on Saturday, and boss Steve Bruce is delighted with the capture.

"We have been particularly short of defensive options of late so Alan will come in at a very opportune time and will provide us with vital reinforcements," Bruce told the club's official website.

"We have tracked him for some time so we're delighted to have brought him here until the end of the season. I'm sure he will have a big part to play between now and May."

The 25-year-old has 14 international caps and had an accomplished six years at Ibrox before former Spurs boss Juande Ramos brought him to White Hart Lane.
