Northampton boss Ian Sampson has completed the signing of Newcastle defender Ben Tozer on loan until October 16.
Sampson moved quickly to add the 6ft 1in central defender to his squad following injuries to Dean Beckwith and Abdul Osman.
Tozer is likely to go straight into the starting line-up to face Liverpool in the Carling Cup on Wednesday.
Sampson said: "He is a player with an excellent pedigree and someone who will do us a good turn over the next few weeks.
"He was really keen to come and already his attitude to get stuck in and do well for this club has impressed me. I tried to bring him in last season but it didn't quite work out then and I am pleased it has now.
"Ben is a highly-rated young player who will improve us over the next few weeks and he will hopefully gain some experience that he will find useful."
