The contract keeps him at Pride Park until the end of next season, with the Rams also having the option to extend his stay for another year.

The deal comes as the 21-year-old has stepped up a level this season, making 15 appearances for the Championship outfit, including four starts.

He is also captain of the reserve team, scoring in the 2-0 win at Walsall on Wednesday.

Good progress

Derby boss Nigel Clough told the club's official website: "Ben has made good progress once again this season.

"He has stepped up a level since last season and we are looking forward to see him develop even further over the next 18 months.

"He has had to be patient at times but when he has played he certainly hasn't let anyone down.

"He is an important player to have in the squad."

Boulding trial

Meanwhile, veteran striker Michael Boulding is on trial with the Rams as Clough seeks to increase his attacking options.

The Derby boss tried but failed in attempts to land Martyn Waghorn and Conor Sammon in January and is now desperate to sign two strikers during the emergency loan window.

Boulding, who was a prolific goalscorer in the lower leagues with Grimsby and Mansfield several years ago, is available as a free agent after leaving Barnsley.

The 34-year-old played in the reserve team victory on Wednesday, featuring for the full 90 minutes and also scoring.
