Bolton have signed Manchester City defender Dedryck Boyata on a season-long loan.

City boss Roberto Mancini feels he has enough defensive cover for the new season and has allowed Boyata the chance to boost his development with the Blues' neighbours.

The 20-year-old made his City debut in January 2010 and has since racked up 22 first-team appearances, including six Premier League starts.

The young Belgian was rewarded with his international debut last October and Bolton boss Owen Coyle is overjoyed to have secured his services.

"I am delighted that we have completed the loan deal for Dedryck because there was interest from a number of other clubs in taking him on loan," he told the club's official website.

"To bring in a player of Dedryck's age and quality is something, as we have shown before, that we like to do.

Tremendous addition

"He is a tremendous addition to the squad and his versatility means that he can operate at centre-half and full-back.

"He has got pace and power and is a flexible and dynamic player."

Boyata admitted he was tempted by the opportunity to work with Coyle having seen him help other young loanees take their career to the next level with successful stints at the Reebok.

"I'm really looking forward to working with the manager," he added. "I have seen how he got the best out of young players like Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge.

"I am only 20 years old and I'm still learning and trying to improve. To come to Bolton Wanderers for a loan period is a great opportunity to do that."
