Wigan have allowed promising striker Callum McManaman to join Championship outfit Blackpool on a three-month loan deal.
The 20-year-old has been allowed to look elsewhere for games as his route to the first team at the DW Stadium is currently blocked.
Every point is precious to the Latics at the moment, following a tricky start to their Premier League campaign, and they are in no position to be experimenting.
They are, however, convinced that McManaman will be a useful asset for the future.
It is hoped that a spell with Blackpool will allow the England U20 international to get minutes under his belt and allow him to start fulfilling his potential.
"Callum is a vital player for the future of our football club and now we must fulfil his needs in order for him to reach his outstanding potential by playing Championship football, which will be the perfect challenge to test all the good things that he's been working on over the last few months," Wigan boss Roberto Martinez told his club's official website.
"We expect Callum to be back with us to help the team with his individual level sharpened up after the loan experience."
While Wigan are prepared to let McManaman spend the next few months with the Seasiders, Martinez has revealed that the youngster will still train intermittently with Wigan, "at the right times, in order to monitor his experience and his progression".
He added: "Loan periods at the right time are needed in the progression of any young footballer to reach their full potential, and one very fresh on our mind could be Tom Cleverley from last season.
"We wish him all the very best for the next three months or so."
McManaman has made nine senior appearances for Wigan in the last three seasons, scoring one goal.
He could make his Blackpool debut on Tuesday in their home date with Doncaster.
