American striker Taylor Twellman is understood to be a transfer target for Preston North End.

The United States international is currently with Major League Soccer side New England Revolution and is the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

Preston are believed to have had an initial bid of around £800,000 rejected but are contemplating returning with an improved offer.

The Lilywhites currently sit second from bottom in the Championship and are the second lowest scorers in the division, so obtaining a proven goalscorer is key during the current transfer window.

German spell

Twellman spent two unproductive years with German side 1860 Munich between 2000 and 2002 and turned down the opportunity to join Norwegian side Odd Grenland before the start of the latest MLS season.

Revolution director Mike Burns confirmed that a bid for the striker had been turned down, but also stated that the club were hopeful of retaining Twellman's services after the striker recently signed a four-year contract extension.

Difficult to replace

"The league has refused an offer for Taylor," said Burns in the Boston Globe.

"To my knowledge, they have not received a secondary offer, so I can't comment on that.

"Taylor just re-signed a long-term contract with the league, so it would have to be a situation where it made sense for everyone.

"But we are not looking to lose Taylor. It would be very difficult to replace him."
