Germany captain Michael Ballack has criticised the timing of speculation on the future of Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez.

The prolific club goalscorer has appeared out-of-sorts at Euro 2008 and Ballack is sure that reported talks between Stuttgart and Bayern Munich have played a role.

"I find it strange that negotiations have to take place during the European Championships," Ballack said in an interview with Die Welt.

Not good

"That is not good for a player and doesn't help concentration.

"I know from experience that it does play a role when something is going on behind the scenes and your name is continually in the media."

Gomez was expected to be one of the stars of Euro 2008 after an impressive Bundesliga campaign, but after poor performances in the group phase he was dropped by coach Joachim Low for the quarter-final victory over Portugal.
