Nancy defender Jean Calve has joined Sheffield United on a trial basis as manager Kevin Blackwell looks to bolster his defence.

The 26-year-old stopper, who is contracted with the French club until 2012, started at right-back for the Blades during their friendly 1-0 win against Notts County on Tuesday.

And he could be poised for a permanent deal at Bramall Lane as Blackwell continues his search for defensive players.

"We know we need a recognised right-back adding to the squad," Blackwell told the club's official website.

"'Kozzy' (Rob Kozluk) showed what he can do, filling in at left-back, but we need more depth.

"Looking at so many options in recent games shows just how patient I'm trying to be in ensuring that the next couple of defensive signings.

"I could sign hundreds for the sake of it, but I'm intent on finding the right ones because if I do I think we will have a decent squad."
