Benfica defender Fabio Coentrao has confirmed he is being courted by Real Madrid.

The Portugal international was already strongly linked with a move to Real last summer, but ended up staying at Benfica as the two clubs could not come to terms over a transfer fee.

Portuguese sources have suggested that Real have not given up on the player, who has a release clause of €30 million, as coach Jose Mourinho looks to fine-tune his existing team to challenge on all fronts next season.

Coentrao has made no secret he hopes to further his career at Real, and has now cast further doubt on where he will be plying his trade after the summer.

"I know there is interest from Real Madrid, I have already said what I had to say."

"My future is not yet certain," he told RTP. "I know there is interest from Real Madrid, I have already said what I had to say.

"Now, I am going on holiday and then we will see what is going to happen."

Promise

"If I leave Benfica, I will return one day, it's a promise on my part, but Benfica must want it, too.

"I have always said I love Benfica and, if I leave, I take the club in my heart."

Last month, Coentrao revealed he wanted to play for Real Madrid, whom he considered to be "the best club in the world" and the only one who would make him leave Benfica.
