Colin Edwards took a surprise pole for Sunday's China MotoGP race as he broke the Shanghai lap record of former team-mate Valentino Rossi.
The American Yahama Tech rider put in a flying lap of 1'58.139 to edge out Rossi and reigning world champion Casey Stoner who finished second and third respectively.
Edwards mark was three-hundredths of a second faster than Rossi's record which was set last year.
"I did two laps very similar and I thought on the last one, 'I know there is more time here,'" Edwards explained afterwards.
"So I kind of closed my eyes going into turn-one and said, 'Let's see what happens.'"
Jorge Lorenzo, who sustained a broken ankle in a big crash on Friday, put in a brave performance to finish fourth despite almost being thrown from his bike again his machine bucked wildly coming out of a corner.
The Spaniard's compatriot Dani Pedrosa took fifth place on the grid.
