Edwards: Pole in China

Colin Edwards took a surprise pole for Sunday's China MotoGP race as he broke the Shanghai lap record of former team-mate Valentino Rossi.

The American Yahama Tech rider put in a flying lap of 1'58.139 to edge out Rossi and reigning world champion Casey Stoner who finished second and third respectively.

Edwards mark was three-hundredths of a second faster than Rossi's record which was set last year.

"I did two laps very similar and I thought on the last one, 'I know there is more time here,'" Edwards explained afterwards.

"So I kind of closed my eyes going into turn-one and said, 'Let's see what happens.'"

Jorge Lorenzo, who sustained a broken ankle in a big crash on Friday, put in a brave performance to finish fourth despite almost being thrown from his bike again his machine bucked wildly coming out of a corner.

The Spaniard's compatriot Dani Pedrosa took fifth place on the grid.
